The NFL or the National Football League is very prominent in America today. About 15 million people tune in every week to watch their favorite teams play. The NFL began in 1920 in Canton, Ohio as the American Professional Football Association. Its name changed to its present name in 1922. Its first president was Jim Thorpe, a professional who played the sport. Today the president or commissioner of the NFL is Roger Goodell. Before, players would earn $100-$400 depending on the team they played for, now players get paid millions. When the league began it had 14 teams and only two of original the franchises are still in the league; Arizona cardinals who were first in Chicago then left to St. Louis and relocated to Arizona in 1988 and the Decatur Staleys who are now the Chicago bears. while the league was growing, it had to deal with other competing organizations. Then it merged with American Football League (AFL) in 1970 creating a 26 team league. After expanding 4 times, 6 new franchises have been added. There are also conferences in the NFL which are the NFC and the AFC. Both conferences play to fill a 12 team bracket to play in the SuperBowl and win a championship. As the league has been growing so have the viewers and revenue, in 2018, the revenue was $8.1 billion meaning every team earned around $255 million. Also, the headquarters of the NFL is in New York and since 1963 it has kept the Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
