The correct pronunciation is macaron. It’s not unusual for people to mistakenly call them macaroons. The original macaroons didn’t contain filling.

They were extremely simple cookies made of almond powder, sugar, and egg whites. The first macaroon cookies was made in Italy, introduced by the chef of Catherine de Medici’s in 1533. The average macaroon has 70-100 calories. In comparison, the average muffin is 400 calories.

On March 20th marks NYC’s Macaroon Day. Bakeries across the city indulge passersby with free macaroon treats to celebrate the sweet confection.
