What is “Lean?” According to Addictioncenter.com, “Lean, known as Purple Drank or Sizzurp, is a mix containing Codeine cough syrup and soda.” Codeine is an opioid, and opioid addiction crisis has reached epidemic levels in the U.S. Lean became popular in rap and hip-hop back in the 1990’s in Houston,TX .This trend is a way for people to party and get inebriated. There are rappers that are known for doing it, such as Ohgeesy, Lil Durk, Lil Wayne, NBA YoungBoy. They use the drink combination as a way to get high; they also use it in their music and show it too.Risk are infertility and changes in the body’s ability to produce hormones, such as testosterone. 

There are harmful effects for people who abuse lean, such lowing of heart rate and causing breathing to slow down. If you take a high amount of lean it can cause you to overdose because it slows your heart rate. Rappers use it as a way to relieve their pain but its an addiction you can’t stop.“Lean gets its name from the user’s loss of balance, which is similar to the behavior of heroin and opioid users”.
