Ballpoint Pens
February 3, 2020
the first ballpoint pen was created by a tanner named John J. Loud, in 1888. It was created with a ball that would not fall out but can also rotate. Over time, people tried to make the pen better but had no luck. that was until a Hungarian newspaper editor, Laszlo Biro, tried to make the pen dry quickly without any smudges. He and his brother, who was a chemist, tried different mechanisms while making the pen so that it can stop the ink from drying inside of the pen. The first working pen was unveiled at Budapest International Fair in 1931. After, they filed for multiple patents and then fled to South America starting their own pen company and selling pens with the name “Birome” in Argentina. After world war 2, other companies began to try and sell ballpoint pens. while some had success but it was very short-lived. paper mate began to make their own pens with new ink formulas, and Marcel Bich (who later shortened his name to BIC) licensed Biro’s pens and started to make them with the same design. Ballpoint pens are known and seen all around the world.
