Takoyaki Recipe!
December 12, 2019
- Takoyaki is a circular batter ball stuffed with yummy octopus then topped with Japanese mayo and takoyaki sauce then bonito flakes making is a beautiful sight to the eye and could make anyone’s mouth water at the batter goodness. Takoyaki originated in Osaka Japan and is a very popular street food. The first time I tried Takoyaki was a literal food heaven experience. I went to Fisherman’s Sushi with my boyfriend, we usually just go for simple sushi like the California roll and rainbow roll since we both are kinda picky when it comes to trying new things until this one day my eye caught the red letters that spelled out “Takoyaki” I read the description and wanted to try it right away. My boyfriend, on the other hand, was kinda iffy since octopus kinda creeps him out. When we got the Takoyaki my nose was filled with wonderful smells coming from it and it looked so pretty with how they displayed it on the dish is was brought on. After the amazing experience that night I thought in my head “how can I make this myself?” and so I went on a search for recipes after that night and surprisingly the ingredients were super easy to get and pretty affordable. I will share this recipe with you now.
okay so for ingredients you’ll need:
- One cup plus 2 tbsp. of all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 tsp. of salt
- 1 tsp. of soy sauce
- 2 cups of dashi ( a broth you can find in your local Asian market)
- Boiled octopus chopped into 1/2 inch cubes
- Japanese mayo (found in local Asian markets)
- Takoyaki sauce (found in local Asian markets)
- dried bonito flakes
- 2-3 green onions finely chopped
- oil
- red pickled ginger
- green dried seaweed
okay, now the instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix well Dashi, eggs, soy sauce, salt, and flour with a whisk.
- Heat a Takoyaki pan with oil to very hot, just until the oil begins to smoke. Use enough oil to coat the pan using a paper towel so that the batter won’t stick. Then pour batter to fill the holes of the pan.
- Drop octopus pieces in the batter in each hole, and sprinkle chopped green onions and ginger all over the pan.
- Cook at medium heat for 1-2 minutes and turn over using a Takoyaki turner (you can use a chopstick too). It can be a little tricky at first, so watch the video to see the technique. Cook another 3-4 minutes, turning constantly.
- Place the cooked Takoyaki on a plate and pour Takoyaki sauce and mayo over them (to taste). Finish the dish by sprinkling the Takoyaki with Aonori (green dried seaweed) and Katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes).
- enjoy your deliciously homemade takoyaki!!!!
