Learning About The Banjo With Mr.Graves

Jaqueline Cosmes, Contributor

Mr.Graves is an amazing librarian that we are lucky to have here at Hueneme High School, one of his hidden talents is playing the banjo! Mr. Graves spent a class period teaching us all about the history of the banjo and teaching us a couple of notes.

We were lucky enough to learn that the banjo was made out of a hollowed out gourd, horsehair strings, an animal skin, and a planed skin. The banjo originally came from West Africa, there are some speculations that the predecessors centered on the ngoni and the xalam, these are two instruments similar to the banjo.
