The Longhorn Cowfish

  • Longhorn Cowfish are a part of the variety of Boxfish and the Ostraciidi family. They are very known for their horns on the top of their head like horns on a bull or a cow.

 

  • Cowfish are found in the Indo-Pacific region, Red Sea also the East Africa eastward through Indonesia and Maqueseas and Tuamotos, South Korea, North to Ryukyu islands od Southern Japan, South of Australia in the Atlantic.

  • They live naturally in coral reefs in lagoons and reef flats also in protected seaward reefs and some associate with Acropora corals.

  • When Cowfish are stressed to a certain point they will discharge a deadly toxin that is poisonous and is released though their skin.

 

  • Longhorn Cowfish don’t have pelvic fins so it makes them slow swimmers and easy to get caught. Their method of swimming is shown as they are hovering over.
