Esophageal Cancer

The esophagus is the tube that connects the throat to the stomach, allowing food to pass. Esophageal cancer occurs when the tissue that lines the esophagus becomes malignant.

Esophageal cancer is rare, accounting for 1 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 17,650 Americans will be diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2019. The disease accounts for more than 2 percent or nearly 16,000 cancer deaths each year in the United States. The five-year survival rate for esophageal cancer is 19.2 percent, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The Myths

Many people like to start their day off with a cup of hot tea or coffee. If you drink your beverages too hot it can increase your risk of getting Esophageal cancer.

Researchers have found that if you drink two large cups of hot beverages. When we say “hot” we mean 140 degrees Farehiet (60 degree celcuis). Have a 90% chance of getting this type of cancer than people who wait for their drink to cool down.
