Kiwibots – The Tiny Deliverymen
February 1, 2019
In Berkeley, Ca, KiwiBots are everywhere. You see them rolling down the sidewalk in downtown, the UC campus, or even around your dorm block! Two years ago the KiwiBot was implemented into the Berkeley community as an experiment, going through many trials and errors, the KiwiBot is somewhat complete.
You’re probably wondering how the KiwiBot delivers your food, if it has no hands to receive the item. There is very little human interaction with your item, a KiwiBot employee drives a KiwiTrike that holds 4 KiwiBots to the designated item pick-up area. The employee will then retrieve the item from a Kiwi dropbox and assign a KiwiBot to your order. On the KiwiBot website the average delivery time is 27 minutes, the average service rating is usually a 4.6, and 65% faster than couriers.
KiwiBots are independent autonomous bots, they work within a perimeter around the UC campus and downtown. The bots have motion sensors to detect objects in front of them and to the side of them, the bots also wait at crosswalks for cars to pass by.
In all, I think the KiwiBots are cute, and productive.
