Kanye backed out due to the fact that Coachella wouldn’t build him a giant dome. Kanye reportedly cancelled just two days before the lineup was to be announced for the event. West wanted a giant dome to be built for him to perform in.

Apparently the dome would’ve been impossible to build within a four month notice and would require a moving of the event site and a removal of a lot of portable restrooms. Paul Tollet, the co-founder of Coachella, got into a heated argument over the phone with West, with Kanye saying, “artist with a creative vision who shouldn’t be spending his time talking about port-a-potties.”

With Kanye no longer to headline, Coachella had to find a replacement which was found in the pop singer Ariana Grande.
