What is suffrage?
December 9, 2018
What is suffrage? Do you agree with it? These may seem like simple questions with easy answers, but in reality, many struggle when it comes to answering these. Why is that? I believe it’s because when people hear “suffrage” they automatically think of “suffering” and correlate it to something bad and negative. Therefore, if someone were to be asked if they want to end it, they’ll most likely say yes. I also believe it’s because people aren’t well educated enough to even know what suffrage is.
While it may sound complex, it really isn’t. Suffrage is simply the right to vote. That’s it. It’s not something absolutely despicable or something that is hard to understand, it’s simply just ones right to vote. In that case, if someone is talking about women’s suffrage they aren’t referring to women suffering or in pain, they are referring to women’s right to vote. I bring this up because there has been instances where individuals have gone on the street and asked people, both men and women, if they wanted to sign a petition to end women’s suffrage. I’m sure you can guess what they chose. The majority of the people who were stopped actually signed the petition to end women’s suffrage, to end a women’s right to vote. Please don’t be that person, know what suffrage is and don’t confuse it with suffering, because believe me they are two completely different things.
