The Origin of Playground Slides
December 7, 2018
When you think of a playground, many things come to mind, including the playground equipment. What kid doesn’t want to run around and have fun with their friends and or family? Possibly one of a kid’s favorite thing to do at a playground is going up and down the slide. Although one doesn’t really think much about this piece of equipment because we think what’s the point or it shouldn’t matter. Slides have actually come a long way from where they are now.
Slides used to be made out of wood and extremely uncomfortable. Not to mention the fact that when they were first invented, by engineer Charles Wiscksteed in 1922, the intention was to be able to have 20 kids ride it in 1 minute; one after the other. They also used to be incredibly steep and long, if you wanted to actually slide down you had to wax the slide with candles or use bread paper to make it slippery.
Slides made back then didn’t really care about the safety of those using it, it was more to just be there to have something different. Luckily, the designs have changed over time, actually keeping the safety of others and of those using it in mind. Thanks to modern engineering and someone realizing that maybe slides should be more enjoyable, we now have the beloved playground equipment that we all know and love.
