What Is Down Syndrome ?

Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. Women at the age of 35 and older have a significantly high risk of having a child with this condition. Down syndrome can’t be prevented, it can be detected  before a child is born.

On average a child with Down syndrome will:

  • Sit at 11 months
  • Crawl at 17 months

Health issues:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Small ears
  • Protruding tongue
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Childhood leukemia
  • Epilepsy
  • Thyroid conditions
