A man that bit off one of the worlds hottest chili called the “Carolina Reaper” has been left with excruciating headaches. This was one of the first recorded case, the next few days after eating the chili the man experienced short splitting lasting seconds at a time.

The 34 year old who was not yet identified, had eaten one of the chilies at a chili eating contest in upstate New York.

Immediately after the competition, he began to develop intense neck and head pain which later spread across the whole head.

He then experienced painful headaches that it reached the point where he decided to go an emergency room.

The patient told doctors that he didn’t have any tingling sensation nor a transient loss of vision, he only had a slight high blood pressure of 134/69 mm Hg.

This prompted doctors to diagnose him with thunderclap headache secondary to RCVS, a temporary artery narrowing often accompanied by thunderclap headache.

Dr. Kilothungan Gunasekaran said that RCVS can occur without an identifiable cause, as an idiosyncratic reaction to certain medications or secondary to an illicit drug.

The mans symptoms cleared up on their own and a CT scan five weeks later showed that the effected arteries had returned to their normal width.
