Dark Valentines Day??

Nicole Moraga, Contributor

Valentines Day is a day full of love, passion, and sweets for your significant other, but it wasn’t always so fun and happy. They can’t pinpoint a certain origin it came from, but let me tell you about the beginning of Valentines Day in Rome. Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia from February 13 to the 15, in which they sacrifice a goat and a dog. After they made their sacrifices, they then whipped the women with the hides of the animals. The young women would actually line up to get hit by these men because they believe it would make them fertile.
An Emperor Claudius II killed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. They were honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.
