Gabby Petito and her fiance Brian Laundrie were traveling in their van during the summer of 2021 for their planned four month cross country journey. They were blogging their journey and posting it on their YouTube channel. Brian Laundrie returned to his home with the van on September 1, but Gabby didn’t. Gabby was reported missing by her parents on September 11, 2021. Gabby’s family reported her missing since they had not heard from her since August 24. The last thing Gabby’s family received from her was a text message saying, “no service in Yosemite.”

Police started questioning Brian Laundrie about where Gabby was, but he didn’t say anything. The police weren’t able to get in touch with him. Brian Laundrie then went “missing,” and police started questioning his parents as to where he was, but they said they had last seen him Tuesday, September 14. While police were searching for her, they found human remains that they thought to be Gabby’s body. The remains were sent to be autopsied to see if the body parts were hers. The results came back, and it was confirmed that the remains were Gabby Petito’s. The results showed that she had died from strangulation, and that her body had been outside for 3 to 4 weeks.

On October 20, 2021 in the Carlton Reserve and the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, human remains were found with a notebook and a backpack that belonged to Brian Laundrie. It was confirmed with a comparison of dental records that the remains that were found were Brian Laundrie’s remains. The results said that it was a bullet to the head, and his manner of death was suicide.
