Chapter 2

I get to the festival and there were several booths that were selling different kinds of food. On the back side, there were rides such as a ferris wheel and a roller coaster. Why am I even here? I don’t belong here. I’m probably looking like a loser.

“You should probably turn back, my friend,” Tenebris said.

“I honestly want to, but I shouldn’t. Why should I even listen to you? You haven’t helped me at all!”

“But have I actually harmed you? No. I can give you strength when you most need it. Everything in this world can’t always be good, even in the places where it seems like it is. Looks may deceive you, boy.”

Tenebris fades away, leaving me pondering over what he just said to me. What can I really even do? I’ve lost my identity being here.

At a stage, a group of girls in vivid-colored dresses were dancing. The dresses looked really pretty and their movements were very graceful. However, one of the young ladies just happened to stand out the most. She had a very gorgeous smile and the dress fit her very elegantly. I forgot about the whole world and I only focused on her; everything else was blurry. I was so distracted by her that I ended up crashing into someone.

“Dear Lord! Please forgive me for bumping into you!” the old man said.

“No, don’t worry about it! It was actually my fault.”

“Don’t sweat it, kid. Have some ride tickets, son. I hope you have a wonderful day!” the old man said and walked away. Wow…

I looked at the ride tickets and then I looked over at the elegant young lady. How do I ask her? Should I? Am I even allowed to? I don’t belong in a place so well-mannered. The dancers come off the stage and everyone applauds. My heart was racing. I proceed over to her direction, where she was talking and laughing with her companions.

“Hey good job up there! I really liked your dancing!” I said. Boy, I probably sounded so lame saying that. She smiled at me.

“Thank you!” she said

There was a moment of awkward silence between us, yet the rest of the world was so loud.

“May I please know your name?” I said.

“You can call me Maria. How about you?”

“Call me Angel.”

“That’s a nice name, Angel,” she said with a smirk.

I feel like I know her from somewhere, but I’m not sure. That would be impossible though. Never in my life have I been to Nobilis except for when I was 12 years old to fight goblins. I don’t even know how much time has passed by since then. The only way I would know someone in Nobilis is if they used to live in Parelthon.

“Anyways, I umm, I have some ride tickets and I was wondering if you would perhaps like to accompany me.”

She glanced over at her friends and then she looked at me. “Sure let’s go!”

Her friends come along too and I become a bit irritated over that. I kind of wanted this to be only us. We head over to the ferris wheel and I had just enough tickets for all five of us. However, that ended up wasting all of the tickets. Maria and I get on the ride and we have a conversation.

“So, Angel, are you new to Nobilis? How come I’ve never seen you here before?”

“Yes,  I am new to this kingdom.”

“Where do you come from?”

“Parelthon.”

“Oh, the kingdom of violence,” she said looking distraught.  “What exactly made you come over here?”

I was getting a bit nervous with all the questions, but I tried my best to play along. “It became dangerous at some point and I had to leave from there as quickly as possible.”

“What dangerous thing could have happened? The last disastrous thing I heard of was the massacre that occurred three years ago by some kind of ‘dark knight.’”

Three years ago!?!? Has it seriously been that long ago?! I tried to remain calm, without my emotions taking over me.

“Well that was one contributing factor. I managed to survive that, but I knew that being in Parelthon was only going to bring despair. There was no trust and many people were being accused for treason.”

“Alright,” she said silently. “This might be a really weird question, but did you perhaps know of a really handsome knight named Petrus?”

My eyes widened. “Yes I’ve heard of Petrus before. He was a very honorable knight and he loved serving the people. How do you know about him?”

“I’ve heard legends about Petrus and how he defended his kingdom since he was 12 years old. Actually, I’ve heard people say how he saved Nobilis from a goblin attack! Everyone knows about Petrus here. He’s a hero to Nobilis. Do you know what happened to him?”

I wasn’t even sure how to answer anymore. Should I reveal myself to her or not? I don’t think I should; I will only bring more trouble if I do.

“I heard that he supposedly ran away somewhere far. Nobody knew where he went. Nobody cared about him anymore. Everyone believed he died.”

“Aww well that’s very sad. Everybody in Nobilis would care about him. Well anyways, aside from all that, I’m sure you’ll learn to like it here in Nobilis.”

My eyes shifted over to her face. “Well, there’s already a part of it that I like.”

We looked at each other’s eyes. I lived the glorious moments of peering into the windows of her soul. My blood felt like crazy. I just wanted to get closer, hold her hand, and hug her. Do it, do it….I can’t.

We got off the ride and I was disappointed for not being able to man up. Her friends and I walked around the festival. It was going pretty good until I heard someone call Maria. It was some other guy and they spent a while talking to each other. I didn’t say anything, despite the jealousy that was consuming my mind.

“What does ‘Parelthon pano ap ola’ mean?” one of Maria’s friends said pointing at my belt.

“Oh that? It’s nothing important,” I quickly responded.

Maria finally came back to the group. I didn’t mention about the guy she talked to and I hoped that she wouldn’t either. I was really hoping that he wasn’t her boyfriend…or that she had one at all. I don’t belong here. For the rest of the evening, we spent it walking around until I finally decided to leave.

“Well, it’s been a really fun day, Maria, but I need to get back home with my family.”

“Ok, thank you for the ride tickets, Angel!”

I walked away from the festival feeling like complete garbage. I felt embarrassed. I can’t even talk to girls at all. Tenebris floats beside me.

“Careful, kid. Are you really going to let this girl control the way you feel? Remember what happened last time.”

“Yeah, but that was before! This is different.”

“Deep down you’re still the same person.”

“Maybe….but that doesn’t mean that my heart is. It has been broken by my own hands and when something is broken, it always has to be rebuilt.”

“It can either be rebuilt by the same pieces or by new ones.”

Tenebris disappeared and I was left alone to walk by myself. I could hear the the sounds of the festival still going on: the live music, the rides, the busy crowd….

I finally reach Cecilia’s home and I find her enjoying a cup of tea.

“So how did it go?” she said smiling.

I gave a weak smile in response. “It was alright. I didn’t actually make friends. I talked to this one girl-”

“Oooh! Who was it?” she said leaping out of her seat to hug me.

“Her name is Maria

“Mmm…Is she the dancer?”

“Yes.”

“Oh she’s a very fine young woman. Very beautiful, kind, joyful, loves helping out at the church. You should get together with her more!”

“Yeah, but then she was talking with another guy. It bothered me.”

“Maybe he’s just a friend, Angel.”

“And maybe so am I.”

She let out a sigh. “Everyone in Nobilis knows that you must have patience and kindness if you want someone to really be your partner.”

“Alright thank you, Mother.”

I went straight to bed and thought about the dancing flower. I couldn’t stop thinking about her. The colorful dress teased me and the boy mocked me…..
