Katalina Martinez is very well known, but best known as Coach K. Coach K is a counselor and is also the head coach for girls varsity basketball at Hueneme High School. She’s social, easy to talk, and also likes to help people in their problems as well.  You will always see her with a smile on her face. I asked Coach K some questions so you guys can get to know her a little more.

Q: When did you start coaching for Hueneme?

A: “I started coaching at Hueneme 5 years ago. This is my 5th season.”

Q: How do you think your basketball girls are going to do this year?

A: “Hueneme’s girl basketball will do well this year. The girls have been working hard all year and had a competitive summer schedule.”

Q: What are your hobbies? Why?

A: “I play basketball because it makes me happy and it helps relieve stress. I also like to travel with my family.”

Q: Do you play any other sports besides basketball? Why or why not?

A: “I play beach volleyball because it always makes me tired, but with a good kill or play, I find energy again.”

Q: What has been your biggest challenge? Why?

A: “My biggest challenge was leaving my family to go to college. I left behind my little brother and sister. It was worth it.”

Q: What is your favorite memory in basketball? Why?

A: “My favorite memory in basketball are the friendships, I still keep in touch with girls on my team.”

Q: What is you biggest accomplishment? Why would you say this is your biggest accomplishment?

A: “My biggest accomplishment is earning my masters degree because as a child I never dreamed that I could go to college, non the less, earn my bachelors then my masters.”

Q: How did you get into coaching and counseling?

A: “I got into coaching while playing basketball in college. I worked all the camps. I went into counseling with the intention to work with youth and my community.”

Q: What is one weird thing no one knows about you?

A: “Weird is not how I would call it, but something no one knows is that I love musicals, riding horses, oh and I had cancer.”

Q: What is one thing you can’t wait for?

A: “I can’t wait for my kids to play basketball or volleyball. I love watching them grow as good people.”
